My Design Approach to Projects

LEARNING-LED DESIGN icon

Learning-led design

To successfully design learning environments within schools it is essential to fully understand the approach to learning and teaching that the spaces are intended to facilitate. Over recent years my work has focused on learning-led design in order to ensure that there is a strong emphasis on learning and teaching and the improvement of educational outcomes when building and remodelling schools and academies through integrated design solutions.

DEVELOPING A LEARNING BRIEF FOR SCHOOLS icon

Developing the Educational Design Brief

Oxford Academy and Mabel Pritchard Special School, Littlemoor Oxford, White Design Associates, Bristol.
The development of a learning - design brief for schools, administrators, architects and contractors needs to be achieved through learning-led design. I believe that if the vision, pedagogy, learning and organisational approach are fully articulated and owned by clients and stakeholders; and that these are shared with design professionals: then outstanding facilities that are fit for purpose and sustainable, are delivered on time and on cost.

Pedagogy, organisation and space

Developing integrated learning spaces on the Island of Portland. AHR Architects Bristol.
It is importance to develop dynamic, flexible and a wider range of connected spaces for the design of future focused schools. Boxes and corridors can’t provide the necessary adaptability and flexibility that modern approaches to learning require. There needs to be a greater range of spaces to facilitate future learning and teaching and provide more choice for students on when, how and where to learn. Collaboration and team working are an essential part of this approach. Spaces that connect and promote collaborative activity for staff and students are an integral part of the new design process.

BESPOKE INTERIOR DESIGN THROUGH DEVELOPING NEW SPACES AND PLACES FOR LEARNING icon

Bespoke interior design through developing new spaces and places for learning

My spaces in new places.
In developing a wider range of spaces for learning it is important to ensure that the needs of all learners are met in the design of more open, connected and inclusive spaces. Light, air quality and ventilation are essential and much greater attention to the use of effective acoustic treatments in new and more open learning environments is required. This is important for all students and staff but especially for those with special learning needs.

MAKING A REALITY OF YOUR VISION FOR LEARNING icon

Making a reality of your vision for learning

Plymouth School of Creative Arts, Plymouth.
The process for working with staff and students to re-imagine and redesign their spaces and environments for learning and teaching is now widely recognised. I have developed approaches that support and help define the rationale and priorities for moving from current to future learning and the pedagogy and organisational approach needed to facilitate this. The importance of prototyping and testing spaces as part of the process and the professional learning support for staff to effectively transition into the new learning environments is a major part of my work.

KNOWLEDGE SHARING, ACTIVE RESEARCH, WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCING icon

Knowledge sharing, active research, workshops and conferencing

An International conference. Portland, Oregon.
I work directly with staff and students in schools to ensure that I am constantly in touch with the relationship between pedagogy, the intended curriculum experience and the organisation of learning when designing new learning environments. I draw on research and effective successful practice through my strategic international role with the Association for Learning Environments and as Chair of this association in the UK. I have developed strong partnership relationships with schools and a range of professional providers who are involved in the design and delivery of schools and learning environments. I attend and contribute to international conferences to gain and share a wider understanding of the international initiatives that are successfully developing and delivering future-focused schools. I am the Associate Editor for Learning Spaces Magazine and regularly produce detailed case studies of my work and visits to these schools.
